Soapbox Sunday

PRINCETON

Hi kittehz!  We have had a wild and wacky weekend.  Our public water was deemed unsafe on Friday due to some failure at the treatment plant.  Mommy scrambled to action.  Daddy scrambled too.  (We now have enough water for the apocalypse.)

This got Mommy to thinking.  She knew her and Daddy needed water, but so did us kittehz, and everybody else at this multigenerational home.  (dogs, ducks and chick-hens included)  She wondered if everybody realizes how much water they really need if there's an emergency.  We were curious and looked at many sources.  A good guideline is a gallon per day for each human and a gallon a day for each woofie or kitteh. Keep 7-10 days worth on hand.  That's a bunch of water!

There are many great sites out there for more info on finding water already in your home and storing it safely.  http://firstaid.about.com/od/emergencypreparation/qt/07_water_supply.htm
http://www.redcross.org/images/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m4440181_Food_and_Water-English.revised_7-09.pdf   These are the two sites that we used.

We hope none of our furriends ever need to use this advice.  Luckily, our water was cleared for consumption 24 hrs later.  But, we'll never be unprepared  again.

Now we're off our soapbox.  Have a super easy Sunday furriends.  Purrs, ya'll.

Pee Ess - We apologize for our lack of visiting and comments.  Our innernets has been on the fritz since the last Thursday.  Pffffffft!!!

  1. Well. THAT'S Mommy's worst nightmare, given that it's HER job to make the water safe to drink! She always jokes if something goes wrong she'll call Daddy to fill up the tub.

  2. I wondered what the Katnip Crew would say. We have always wondered what would happen in the USa where water can be such a scarce commodity. Here we live right near a lake, which is clean enough for swimming, and the water can be boiled for drinking. A most excellent informative post, dudes. And enjoy the baff!

  3. We used to keep lots of water around in case of the dreaded QUAKES but then we got lazy and complacent. The Human should go get some!

Also: You scared me! You don't REALLY think the Furrari could get impounded, do you??? I mean, not even the KGB could be THAT mean!

  4. We generally have a stash of bottled water here, since we get Arrowhead deliveries every month. My human worries about whether those big, hard plastic bottles would hold up in an earthquake, though.

  5. We have some bottled water around. Twice a year the water here tastes and smells yucky. They're doing something with the water something in this part of the city. So then, we both use bottled water.
But there is not enough in case of a real emergency.
Oh, when the water gets yucky, the water department says it is perfectly okay and safe. But we don't drink it.

  7. Our state is currently going through water rationing at the moment where we get water for 2 days then no water for the next 2 days. Mommy has stored plenty of drinking water for all of us, including the plants. :p

  13. We forget about this stuff living in the city, but this is a good reminder. After BP dumped all that oil in our lake, I'm surprised we haven't been shut off from our water supply at all. Thanks for the tips!

  15. Paws up for the reminder! It's coming into hurricane season, and we need to restock our bottled water, since we try to rotate it. We once had a bottle go bad in the spare room closet and leak, and... you don't want to hear those HBO words, kitties! For hurricanes, we also have collapsible 5 gallon water jugs we can fill up, which are really meant for the manpeep's for camping, but hold water more reliably than our bathtub does.

  24. Good thing we kitties don't need water for our baffs like our humans do. Our humans keep a couple of gallons on hand at all times, but it sounds like we would need nine gallons a day for all of us. Wowzers, Mom says she doesn't know where she would keep that much extra water. Glad your water was cleared so quickly. Hope this never happens for you again. 25. Whew, I sure am happy you got your water back. How awful to have to go out and round up enough water to survive for everyone. Yes, it would be hard to store that much water. But she says, if you have to do it, you'll find a place. Hope that never happens to you again.

  26. Whoa! No water? That stinks. TW only drinks bottled spring water, so we have cases all over the condo. We have enough for a month. Lately, they’ve been sending notices around once/week telling us that they’re turning off our water all day for repairs. TW fills everything in the condo with water including the tub. Stay safe.
