Prancer Pie Update

Prancer Pie Update:  8:30 a.m. CST, I just talked to our Vet and he said Prancer Pie was perkier this morning, but stilll had diarrhea and his heart rate is still too high.  It is actually twice what it should be.  **sighs**  He told me that hyperthyroid kittehz tend to have these problems and on average live about two years after diagnosis.  Prancer Pie was diagnosed two years ago.  Any of our CB furriends have thoughts on this?  I had no idea and was devastated last night when told this.  I just thought it was a chronic problem.  We still have a 3:15 appt. and he want to continue giving him fluids until then.  He actually brought up terms such as "quality of life" and "knowing when to let go".  I actually cried myself to sleep last night/this morning.  Sorry for rambling and will update this afternoon.

Pee Ess - in other news, pray for Princeton because he has already tore all the tissue out of a tissue box I was using last night and it is far too cold here today to open the catio!

  1. Oh No! No! No! That's terrible. We have no experience with hyperthyroid but hope someone else can help. Maybe a 2nd opinion?

  4. I had forgotten that Prancer has hyper-t.

Annie had been diagnosed in Sep 2009 and she died Feb 2011. So yes, about 2 years, maybe the cat lives a third, from what I had read at the time (I joined a Yahoo Feline Hyper-T group.) That's on the meds, I mean. If you're able to get the I-131 treatment done, it's another matter. I regret not being able to go that route and wish I could have a redo with Annie...but of course that's not possible.

I don't know what to tell you. Have you been in touch with Cheri at Cats of Wildcat Woods? At least one of her senior kitties was hyper-t and lived with that for quite some time, treated homeopathically.

I'm sending you LOTS of hugs, because I understand only too well. But unfortunately I can't offer suggestions...You know I lost Annie anyway, in spite of all that I/the vet tried.

I'm NOT suggesting it's Prancer Pie's time, only you will know that. Hopefully he'll still have many months or even longer with you.

Sending universal Light and love and many, many hugs.

  5. Oh ******. No, I cannot believe that. My heart is breaking for you. And you know, I have never heard of this diagnosis from your vet and would strongly advise a second opinion.
I have had two hyperthyroid cats. Monty, un the UK, had the thyroid removed and lived to be a ripe old age. He was already very old when I had him. Tuomo was on tablets for a couple of years and suddenly died of heart failure- the day before there was no sign of any illness. So I do not regard that as actually a side effect of hyperthyroidism - it is something which just happened. I had asked the vet what his long term prognosis was and she said it was as good as any healthy cat of his age. His medication was tablets though, not the gel. I admit I know nothing about gels. The only link I have used which I totally trust is this: http://www.icatcare.org/advice/cat-health/hyperthyroidism-overactive-thyroid-gland

i am not surprised you cried yourself to sleep. I cannot believe this, and your recent posts don't indicate anything about Prancer Pie not having quality of life, so maybe it's not time for that decision. Only you can know, and I believe Prancer Pie will let you know about that.

I am so very sorry you are going through this. I'm not religious but I will say some prayers if it helps.

Many many purrs for you, Prancer Pie and of course Princeton and his little frustrations!

  6. I just saw this - Yoko has high normal thyroid with a fast heart rate. She was diagnosed in 2008 and lied for 6 years. I treated with Thyroid Support Gold from pettwellbeing.com and also gave her Thyroid soothe by petalive.com and the herb hawthorn for her heart. If you have a holistic vet nearby try them for ideas.

  14. I totally forgot about Prancer's hyperthyroid on top of everything else. I think you are getting some good advice here. I have nothing to add, except I'm sending lots and LOTS of purrs Prancer's way. And yours too.

  15. We were so saddened to read this but we too think it may be a good idea to get a second opinion before making any drastic decisions. And we hate to say this but all that thyroid talk sounds like an attempt to distract you from the clearly wrong use of Convenia. If you have a good veterinary college in your area, their hospitals often are state-of-the-art and can offer options that smaller clinics cannot.

Whatever happens, you know that all of us are thinking of you and sending good thoughts.

  18. Years ago, my daughter's Siamese became sick with hyperthyroidism and we opted for the isotope treatment which is expensive, but afterwards, he regained his weight and was fine until he deteriorated and was helped to the Bridge at the ripe old age of 23. I don't know in Prancer's case what would be best since there may be other complications, but I would get a second opinion from a vet at another clinic and research the situation. It's so very, very hard for us to accept when things happen and it doesn't help when the common feeling is that not all vets are created equal. May you be guided by heaven and take each step carefully; and only after facing no other recourse, do what is best for Prancer. We feel for you so much after losing three cats and a dog the last few years. We'll keep you in our prayers and think healing thoughts for Prancer. xx

  26. Hi hi hi - Ojo here.

Prancer, you must get better for your person. You hang in there buddy, okay? Show those nasty people called Vet that "two years" doesn't mean anything - you can live to be an old Man Cat, right? Right.

Many healing licks and wags from everyone here. Oh, and pets from our person, who doesn't have a tail to wag. And purrs from Jack the Cat. Lots of Canadian love coming your way, Cat-friend!

And Princeton - I know what it is like to be cooped up! It's horrible! But maybe you could behave for your person right now? She needs healing purrs more than torn up Kleenex. Okay? Okay.

    Licks and wags,
    Ojo, Cobi & family

  31. The Mom left you a really long comment on your last post, but hers will add a little here, too.

The mom is no vet, but hers has never heard that hyperthyroid kitties only live two years after diagnosis. In her opinion, that doesn't sound quite right. Every kitty is an individual!

Hers thinks you might want to seek another opinion. Maybe a different vet will have another idea on how to help Prancer out.

    Please hang in there.

Lots of love and hugs and purrs! <3

  32. I am sorry you have been given such bad news, but I also think you need to get a second opinion. My first thoughts on reading what the vet told you were the same as the Poupounette's. It seems to me that he is trying to keep away from the fact that PP became so ill after the administration of the Convenia. Many years ago I worked for a vet and I remember 2 cats we were treating for hyperthyroidism lived good long lives. It is too long ago for me to remember the treatment, but I remember one living well into their 20s, 24 I think. Living to such an age was unusual back then, that is why I remember it.

  33. I saw your later post first. Maybe the reason some kitties pass within two years is because they are often senior kitties when they are diagnosed? Purrs and hugs to you.

  36. We don't have any advice but we have all the love and purrs in the worldz to send you. All we gotz and more. The second opinion is a must in any critical situation if your beloved can be moved. We vote for the homeopathy as well if the second vet gives no more insight. That Woman says crying yourself to sleeps is sucky and she knows how you feels. We all do of course here in the CB.
Hang on and Hang Tough! We are all on your side!

  37. We are so sorry!
And we are praying hard for both Prancer and Princeton. Licorice, the cat who went over the bridge 3 years ago, had thyroid disease. He took a pill daily for 6 years and lived to the ripe old age of 18. He had a couple of illnesses during that 6 years where we thought we may have to chose quality over quantity. Both times, he rallied. Keeping him interested in food was difficult both times he was ill, we resorted to baby food.
At the end, he went very quickly (4 days). We knew right from the start he was ready to go and we just kept him as comfortable as we could. He quit eating, but was drinking water, he wanted to cuddle - a lot.
We are praying for you and we send you strength.
    Lovingly Barb (Nellie's Mom)
